Does following Christ put you at odds with the world?

I think that for most Christians we recognize that we are called to be different than the world, even though I am not convinced that we always do or that we even always understand why. The truth is that we have bought into the idea that the world is not all that bad. Because of our sinful nature we are all familiar with living in the gray areas and we are all used to the brokenness that sin brings. So, it’s easy to see people in shades of gray and not black and white. We forget that the Bible teaches us that before we were saved that we all were enemies of God. In fact, I think we can forget that we are not favored by God because of what we do, but simply because Christ has redeemed us. When we lose these concepts, it becomes far easier for us to think that the world is not all that bad and that there are good people out there, and certainly there are people who are nice or friendly, but in terms of righteousness the world is seriously lacking. You have to ask yourself; how do you derive your beliefs? Do you submit yourself to the truth found in the scripture and do you surrender any idea of truth you may have to it? Do you weed out any thought or belief that is not supported by God’s word or do you just ignore the teachings of scripture in favor of what you’d rather believe? Or do you derive your beliefs from the reasoning of the people you’re surrounded by? It has to be the word of God, because only in it do we find the truth of God which transcends the broken nature of man.

In this Sermon

We are going to lay a deeper foundation into the concept of how the world and the church are not on the same page and how we should perceive that.
