The quick answer is yes, you can. In fact to say that you are a Disciple of Christ means that you believe that God exists and that you believe that created the universe and everything that is in it. To try and separate God and the fact that He created is incompatible with Christian thought. However there has been an ongoing attack on God’s existence and the truth that He is responsible for creation. This has caused people to come up with all kinds of different ways of dealing with these ideas. The most far fetched is to adopt a secular humanistic understanding of the universe under the Christian banner. The only problem is that if you remove God and that He is the origin of everything then you remove the message of the gospel and scripture. That message starts with the idea that God exists and that He created and then deals with our problem when we are disobedient to him.
Well What About Science?
Science is a good thing and does its best to answer big questions. However, contrary to popular belief science and religion are not at odds and oftentimes scientific discovery follows Biblical assertions. Don’t believe me? How about the flat earth theory? Many modern atheists would condemn religion and more specifically Christianity as originating such debunked notions as the flat earth, but is this true? In fact while the flat earth theory was believed by many, it was more of a cultural assertion than a religious one. Sure there are people who were church leaders who held to this notion but what does the Bible say? Isaiah 40:22, “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” What you are reading was written some 2,500 years ago and in it are contained two scientific concepts. The first is that the earth is a circle, not flat and the second is that the universe has and is expanding. The stretching of the the heavens has only been a more recent scientific discovery.
What About The Idea That God Is An Invention of Man?
Well, if you don’t know God then you have to come up with a reason why people believe in Him. So the theory is that primitive man came up with the idea. It is supposed that ancient people were too unintellectual, too limited in their reasoning and understanding of the world around them and so they came up with this idea. Well, who ever said that ancient men were stupid? Only those who wish to declare that they are the pinnacle of intellectualism. In other words if my ideas are considered superior then to disagree means that you are inferior. Sounds more arrogant than enlightened, however that is their belief. I think that history shows us something very different. We still study and scrutinize the works of men like Plato and Aristotle. We still marvel at the pyramids and the seven wonders of the world. Although ancient men measured their intellect differently, they were not void of intelligence. I believe that the reason that ancient men wrote about God and religion was not a lack of knowledge, but that they were writing about what they knew. I believe that they were tapping into something that modern man has lost.
