What place do politics and government play in the life of a Christian?

This is a hard question and not because the Bible doesn’t answer it, but more because we can get so caught up in politics that it is hard for us to hear what the Bible has to say about it.  Let’s face it politics are a part of what defines social norms, it is central to the shaping of a culture and helps us define our rights and what freedoms we can enjoy.  And so it is something that we take seriously.  Sadly, politics have become the biggest idol in America and I would argue has surpassed God and Church as the prominent influencer on the individual.  Let’s face it, it is easy to get caught up in the back and forth of politics as politicians and news cycles serve up tasty bits of intrigue, scandal, and daily battles of who is more right about the future of our country.  It is easy to listen to their reasoning and buy into their way of seeing things and even jump on the bandwagon.  The question is, “Are we supposed to be that engaged?”  Now don’t hear me wrong, I am not saying that we should bury our head in the sand, but are we Americans who happen to be Christian, or are we Christians who happen to be American?  In other words, are we of this world or are we not?  Have we been called out or are we still in?  Who is our King and where is our country?  We need to understand what the Bible teaches us and it may just mean that we have to change our position when it comes to our politics (and by the way that doesn’t mean that we need to change to another party).

In this Sermon

We are going to look at how we are called out of the darkness of this world and what that means.  We’ll also take a look at the treasonous statement that the first church made against Rome and how that got them killed.
