Does God Want a Relationship With Us?
Last week we talked about giving God everything and not settling into religious motion and activity. We took a look at what it meant to love God with all of your heart, soul, strength, and mind. And here is the thing about that, God is not looking for religious followers, He is looking for people that want to actually get to know Him and that He can know. There is an intrinsic intimacy built into Christian faith that takes us beyond religious expression and into knowing God. It is the very reason we say things like “It’s not a religion, it’s a relationship”. Listen to the heart of Jesus as he expressed a similar thought to the disciples. John 15:15, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” When they had started to follow Jesus, they were merely students, following Jesus to learn from Him, yet somewhere along the way they became friends. And why? Because that was the goal all along. God did not gather them, just to teach them a new religion or to create followers. Jesus was going after something else. What Jesus wanted was a group of faithful men and women who would be able to inherit the kingdom and that didn’t happen just from getting them to do religious stuff it came when they had bonded with Jesus. In fact, it was when Jesus had shared all that the Father had given Him with the disciples that they became friends and bearers of the kingdom and the gospel. You see the knowledge that Jesus had shared wasn’t the point or purpose, was what that knowledge did in the lives of those who received it and what it did was to make normal everyday people heirs of God’s promises and to open up a blessed friendship with the God of the universe. That was the goal for them then and that is the goal for us today, to become friends of God.
