What can we learn from Joseph’s Story?

Something that we often forget when we read the story of Jesus’ birth in the Bible is that it is more than just the story of Christmas.  In fact these were real situations experienced by real people which makes the accounts that we read even more incredible and precious.  It is my heart that we don’t simply gloss over the situations faced by people like Joseph and Mary, but that we look at how those situations impacted their lives and the faith-filled decisions that they made as they navigated through them.  Why?  Because we know how the story goes and we know that everything works out for God’s glory in the end, so it is easy to romanticize the people and what we read about them.  However, we can never forget that these situations unravelled over the course of months and even years and that in-between the sentences and paragraphs were real people living real lives.  So in this series we are going to take a look at some of the key characters and understand what they faced and how they faced it so that we might get an even greater understanding and appreciation for that first Christmas.

In this Sermon

We’re going to take a look at Joseph’s Story, especially what he was facing when Mary becomes pregnant and not with him.  We’ll take a look at what betrothal is all about, how Mary’s pregnancy changed that, and all the legal and financial troubles that Mary would have faced.  Then we’ll take a look at Joseph’s character, how he was planning on dealing with Mary and how God intervened and honored Joseph instead.  Joseph’s story is more than just a footnote to Mary’s, in it you will see how his character laid a foundation for Jesus and you might just learn what listening to God is all about.
