What does the Bible say about Tithing?

The trend for giving to religious organizations is down and current statistics state that only one out of every four families in church tithe.  Yet there is clear instruction all throughout the scripture where Godly people practiced tithing.  So the question becomes, am I really supposed to give to the church a tenth of my income?  It’s easy to be suspicious especially when we are talking about our money, because we need it to live and to pay our bills.  So, when anyone asks us for money we want to make sure that we are not being taken advantage of.  It’s no surprise that when the church teaches about tithing that people approach it with a bit of skepticism and hesitation.  It doesn’t help either that there have been churches, ministries, and pastors who have manipulated Biblical truth for their own financial benefit.  So its easy for us to question whether I should tithe or give my money to the church, but if we set all of the bad stereotypes aside, is there a Biblical precedent for tithing and giving and if so what does that mean for me?

In this Sermon

We are going to take a look at the origins of tithing in the Old Testament, the heart of the fathers of our faith, the laws surrounding tithing, and whether or not it was a principle in the New Testament church.
